Reader Interfaces

This articles describes what we mean by 'Reader Interface' and how it is used within the VOLO system.

What is a Reader Interface?​

We consider a Reader Interface to be the way in which an access control reader communicates with a controller. This includes:

  • The electrical interface
  • The communication protocol

There are a variety of different interfaces in the market, including the following:

  • Clock & Data
  • Wiegand
  • OSDP
  • RS232
  • USB
  • Ethernet/LAN
  • Proprietary

Which Reader Interfaces are Supported by VOLO?​

At present, the VOLO system supports the following interfaces:

  • Wiegand - up to 256 bit
  • Clock & Data

If you are using Paxton readers and tokens, then you should select Clock & Data. Most other readers compatible with VOLO will use some form of Wiegand.
